The Andhra Pradesh Council of Churches came into being in its present form in the year 1943. Originally, the Churches and Missions in this part of the region were part of the Tamilnadu Christian Council. With the reorganisation of the States, Churches and Mission organisations those were within the geographical area of Andhra Pradesh became Andhra Christian Council and subsequently Andhra Pradesh Christian Council. Both at the national and the state level, Christian Councils became Councils of Churches indicating primacy to the Church. Even though the present state level councils were called as regional Christian Councils comprising two to three states together, Churches in many states have opted to be state level Councils. This is common in many South and Central Indian States. North East and North West are still a vast region based Councils.
Consequent to the division of the State of Andhra Pradesh into a new state of Telangana and the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh, the A.P. Council of Churches as mandated by the 43rd Biennial Conferences in April 2013, a scheme of bifurcation duly processed by the Executive Committee was approved and membership of the respective councils was authenticated by approved and membership of the respective councils was authenticated by the 44th Biennial Conferences held in October 2015 and carved out the new Telangana Council of Churches with the member churches and Organizations with in the geographical jurisdiction of 10 Districts of the State of Telangana as Telangana Council of Churches and member churches and the organizations within the jurisdiction of 13 Districts of the residuary State of Andhra Pradesh as the residuary A.P. Council of Churches.
While the individual Churches are denominational in teaching, sacramental and service issues, the pioneers of the Indian Church movement like late Bishop V.S. Azariah of Dornakal struggled a great churches. As a Council, setting up of regional theological Seminaries, Publishing Houses, Dialogue centres, Training Institutes, Disaster Management mechanisms, Economic Assistance Agencies are a few examples of the collective endeavours of the Churches through their ecumenical bodies called the Councils of Churches.
The Andhra Pradesh Council of Churches with a live membership continues to live and serve the cause of Ecumenism in Andhra Pradesh.
The Council works through a Quadrennial Conference that elects officers, Executive Committee, Boards and standing committees charged with specific tasks for facilitation, correlation and coordination of Ministry of the Church in Andhra Pradesh.
